The networks were created in 2013 following the Premier League’s rights acquisition by BT Group. Prior to launch, BT also purchased the rightsholder ESPN’s activities and integrated them with BT Sport. BT Group and Warner Bros. Discovery announced in 2022 that they will establish a joint venture to eventually combine BT Sport with its regional Eurosport division. After the deal was authorized in July 2022, BT Sport changed its name to TNT Sports on July 18, 2023, and Eurosport UK would be incorporated into the brand by early 2026 at the latest.

On June 12, 2012, BT made its first appearance in the sports broadcasting world when it was revealed that they had defeated ESPN UK, who had shared rights with Sky Sports the season before, to win the rights to 38 live Premier League games for three seasons starting in the 2013–14 season.

Simultaneously, BT declared that it will be introducing its own channel for its upcoming football programming. The announcement came after rumors that ESPN was reevaluating its place in the UK. In the months that followed, BT also secured the rights to American, Brazilian, French, Italian, and Premiership Rugby, along with the 7s Series that goes along with it.
